Art Director - Barb Macleod

I am a Canadian artist who has been working in 2 and 3 dimensional fibre art for over 25 years. Under the name of Baas Studio I have done commissions in various fibre-based techniques for purely artistic / decorative installations as well as functional / architectural solutions and decorative sound control.

HOME GALLERY CV COMMISSION

You will be able see some of my work by starting at the gallery page. Or check out my cv or commission process pages.

I first produced commission textile art in 1974 after graduating from Sheridan College School of Design. I had studied weaving and silk-screening, ceramics, metal arts, photography, and wood arts while there; but textiles was the medium that drew me.

My first works were hand-woven pieces, but because of the nature of commission work I was constantly challenged to come up with new ideas and solutions. I began stretching my work over wooden templates which allowed pieces to take any shape I desired. With the use of stuffing I got a rounded soft-sculpture look with crisp edges. Next I included fabric sections with the weaving and then airbrushed the fabrics with dyes to achieve a more painterly look. Three-dimensional challenges came along and I tried new and varied materials, as you will see in the gallery section.

I have done hundreds of commissions in these 25 years, varying in size from 3'x 4' to 6'x 100' Generally I have seen the space before I designed, but often I have worked from photos and architect's plans. Sometimes, as in the case of a hotel in Saudi Arabia, I have never seen the installation.

In this description I use "I" for ease of writing. It would not be possible however, for me to tackle projects of this number and magnitude without the major help of my partner Drew Easterbrook and various assistants from time to time. Drew is involved in all aspects of the process and the death-defying installations are his forte.

From 1980-1990 Drew and I owned and operated Baas Studio Gallery in downtown Toronto. There we showed the work of many talented artists and craftspeople from across North America, and produced and showed my art. In 1990 we moved the studio to Georgian Bay and continue to do commissions.

I find commission work keeps me ever trying new things. Each new space and each new client brings challenges to spark my creativity.
